Both women want to get away from the stereotypical idea of what a women should be and show what they can be instaed if they only try.Īlthough in Skyscraper the working women does not seem so burdened and looked down upon like in the novel Breadgivers. Some of the similarities between the novel Breadgivers by Zeyierska and skyscraper by Faith Baldwin is the strength and determination to succeed on their own shown by the two main characters in these novels.

On the other hand I can see where she has to be so self-reliant and determined so as to to be her own person and how that she is not ignorant or lazy, needing a man to take care of her, she can take care of herself. Lynn shows her dtermination and will that her boyfriend eventually relents and agrees to her idea of what marriage should be between them when Tom thinks to himself ".appalled at the sacrifice of pride, more desireable than principles, terribly beloved"(Baldwin 96). She seems to always want things her way and I will say she is stubborn and determined enough to get what she wants. I have to say that so far in my reading of this novel, I do not find it as engrossing as the novel Breadgivers by Anzia Yezierska.I find Lynn, the main character, to be a very young and idealistic girl not really ready for a serious relationship nor all the compromises that have to be made when you do have a relationship with someone. But her company has a strict new policy: Any woman who marries will be immediately fired.First published in 1931the same year the Empire State Building opened its doorsSkyscraper marks the advent of a new kind of romance plot, and Lynn a new kind of heroine.
